Local Director to Compete with World’s Best at Abu Dhabi

Tim Greene is best known as the film maker who convinced 1000 people to each invest R1000.00 in his first feature film, Boy Called Twist.  With the finance raised through ‘crowd-sourcing’ – which at the time had not been done before in South Africa - the film was released to critical acclaim and went on to screen at Cannes and festivals around the world.

With his second film SKEEM, Greene will be rubbing shoulders with the who’s who of international directors when the film has its World Premiere at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival on 16th October 2011.

A classic caper movie that follows a mile-a-minute chase after a cardboard box full of cash, SKEEM has been selected to compete in the Showcase section, alongside films by such acclaimed directors as Martin Scorsese, Wim Wenders, George Clooney, Steven Soderbergh, Werner Hertzog and Terry Gilliam.

“It is a great honour to be included,” says producer Zaheer Goodman-Bhyat, “To be considered good enough to be in competition with these films is a dream come true. I cannot describe how proud I am to see Tim Greene’s name in the roster with these directors.”

With one of the finest ever assembled casts in a South African feature film SKEEM boasts household names like Grant Swanby, Kenneth Nkosi, Rapulana Seiphemo, Casey B Dolan, Terence Bridgett, Zikhona Sodlaka, David Isaacs and Kurt Schoonraad.

As Goodman-Bhyat points out, “If you look at the cast lists of the films we are competing against, they’re all A-list Hollywood celebs!  It just makes me feel so proud of our local talent.”

SKEEM has been snapped up by United International Pictures for release in South African cinemas from  28th October 2011.

AFDA student filmmakers take The Tupperware Party to Belgium

image

AFDA 2009 graduation film The Tupperware Party, written and directed by Stacey Howell, was selected to be screened at the 11th International Festival for Cinema Schools – FIDEC.

The festival takes place in Belgium from 23 October 2011 at the Kihuy theatre and the cultural centre of Huy.

FIDEC strives to be the link between cinema students, industry professionals, media and the public, by promoting short films produced by Belgian and foreign students.

The Tupperware Party is set inCape Town, 1976, where it is possibly the most turbulent time in South Africa’s history. The Soweto uprisings have just occurred and anti-apartheid riots have spread all over the country.

Foreign countries are imposing sanctions and South Africa is being condemned from every corner of the globe. Steve Biko’s Black Consciousness movement is growing in support from white students and the National Party is coming under tremendous pressure to relinquish power. There is a tangible sense of panic and hysteria. Amidst all the turmoil, housewife Daphne Swanmore is concerned about one thing and one thing only – her Tupperware party.

AFDA strikes at the Loerie Awards!

An AFDA & Vega School collaboration won a bronze award in the 2011 Loerie STUDENT AWARDS: TV, CINEMA & INTERNET COMMERCIALS section.

‘The World Bullies You When You Can’t See’ - Ster-Kinekor and Spec-Savers have joined forces to get spectacles to underprivileged children. Their objective is to create opportunities for children who are unable to create them for themselves. Thus they have embarked on a ‘Vision Mission’, raising funds to buy glasses for children who cannot afford glasses alone. The objective of the advert is to make the public aware of ‘Vision Mission’ and encourage them to donate to the cause.

The editor of the advert; Tanille Retief explains that this particular brand is a helpful, hopeful one, and so reflects the adverts intention. A young school boy is bullied by his environment because he can’t see properly. Inanimate objects come alive and threaten the boy (pushing, pulling or tripping him) thus displaying to the audience the boys warped view of the world and the struggles that he faces as a result of impaired eyesight. The journey of simply walking home from school becomes difficult and sad to watch as he struggles through everyday obstacles (turning a corner, walking up stairs etc). Depth perception and focus would allow most people to avoid collisions and hurting themselves but lack of such things causes the boy to trip, fall and become exhausted by his journey, a pain that he would not have to endure could he afford glasses. The illusion of inanimate objects coming alive was created and achieved by painting real human beings to match the environment - against a wall, in a staircase or a stack of tires in order to camouflage them into the background, then only as the people moved from their environment was the illusion broken and the audience allowed seeing the people hidden in the background.

No visual effects were used to create this optical illusion; the people were painted on set (approximately 4-6 hours per person), the advert was shot over two days. Ultimately the advert presents a ‘call to action’. Showing the audience exactly how they can help this boy and many others, thus playing a vital role in giving so many underprivileged children the gift of sight.

The advert gives the audience unique insight into a life with impaired vision by allowing them to truly engage with a character and the brand and see that by adding the small amount of R2.50 through Sterkinekor and Spec-Savers, they can be involved in changing someone’s life.
