The AFDA Experimental Festival

The AFDA Experimental Festival is the exhibition aspect of the AFDA learning system and is designed to:

  1. Provide students with the necessary skills to host, market and manage a festival.
  2. Provide students with an experiential platform that facilitates the understanding and development of the relationship between the entertainment product and its intended audience.
  3. Provide students with an opportunity to showcase and benchmark their work with their peers, staff, the industry and the public.

Every year AFDA, the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance, hosts their Annual Experimental Festival and this year it is taking place at the AFDA Cape Town and Johannesburg on the 22 – 23 June 2012.

The Festival is not only a screening of the 3rd year Experimental Live Action and Animation films and documentaries filmed by the honours year students, but also include a stage performance by the Honours acting students on Friday evening.

Live entertainment will be provided by AFDA students on both the Friday and Saturday evening as well as Musical Performance showcases by the first year students on Saturday.

All tickets are R10.00; students will be manning product stalls along with a Marketing Expo while the films are being showcased and everyone is welcome to join in on the festivities.

The Product Stalls allows the students to sell products, such as food, drinks and sweet treats, to help raise funds for their graduation films happening in September.

The Marketing Expo informs the audiences about the production of the various films – This is a fun-filled, informative day for all! (Certain age restrictions do exist on certain films- please check the programme).

The Experimental Festival is run by the 3rd Year Producing Students and CLVA - the student representative body. The development and production of these films allow the young filmmakers to discover their own cinematic language and style of filmmaking and to express their ideas and concepts without restriction. The narratives tend to be non-linear and have aspects of avant-garde styles of filmmaking.

The theme for this year’s festival is 1950’s Carnival.
